Chinese traveller indicted of swallowing solid during Sri Lanka fair

Sri Lankan military arrested the Chinese traveller suspected of swallowing the solid value Rs 1.8 million during the island nation's biggest international gem as well as trinket exhibition.

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan military arrested the Chinese traveller suspected of swallowing the solid value 1.8 million rupees ($ 13,600) on Wednesday during the island nation's biggest international gem as well as trinket exhibition.

Chow Cheng, 32, is believed to have swallowed the solid as he legalised it during the exhibition, attended by buyers from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, India as well as Europe, military said.

"His intention was to take it," Police spokesman Ajith Rohana told Reuters. "The x-ray shows the solid is in his throat."

Suresh Christopher Wijekoon, owners of the muster stall, pronounced Chow had tried to switch the original solid with the fake one.

"He realized which we noticed it. Then he rught away swallowed it," Wijekoon told Reuters.

The Indian Ocean island is famed for the blue sapphires, diamonds as well as the jewelry industry which accounted for $ 532 million of the export revenue in 2011.
