Garcia is wrong. A new Straits Times it isnt

Dear Tengku Razaleigh

That paper we paid for upon Tun Razak's instructions almost 40 years ago has turned the back upon the parentage again. It doesn't want to be The New Straits Times, it keeps wanting to be the new Straits Times. we wonder how we feel? (It equates to nothing to me, it's not my paper.)

Having done the Singapore Straits Times before, as well as done most small hops over to KL whilst perplexing to do the Star, the large cheese of the newspaper pattern pole Jose Mario Garcia may have got the small confused about which side of the Causeway he was at the past couple of months.

He's been flogging the line which the NST must stress the "new" in the title.

Only trouble is: he's 40 years out of date.

It was New when Umno paid for over the Malaysian assets of The Straits Times in 1972 as well as relaunched the paper. The shift came gradually, though noticeably visible in the titleplate.

First, the blackletter pretension (in Ye Olde English style) done approach for the modernised domestic face. Then the "New" took the place. And so it remained until after the switch to tabloid masterminded by Kalimullah Hassan. A new pretension pattern was churned up. The "New" shrank to insignificance as well as the "Straits Times" suddenly re-emerged (in almost the counterpart picture of the shift receiving place down south.)

A sellout to Singapore, critics shouted.

Now along comes Jose Mario Garcia job for the New to be re-emphasised. And he's managed to convince the nutters in NST government to go along. Once again, the "new" Straits Times.

Except which it isn't.

The other rag, The Straits Times, is down ther in Singapore, with the small red dot in the pretension sneering at the rest of we yobs.

On our side of the Causeway, what we have is The New Straits Times, the NST (or Enesty if we wish), paid for by Umno in 1972 as well as constructed by as well as for Umno ever since.

!

What Balai Berita constructed upon Friday was the Newer NST. But by giving in to Jose Mario Garcia's pretension design, they proclaim which they have, once again, regressed to being only the new "Straits Times".

Have they no honour left?

Okay, own up. Who is offered out to Singapore as well as the PAP this time?
