[Mengzi in translation, James Legge] Mencius went to see King Hui of Liang. The aristocrat said, 'Venerable sir, given we have not counted it distant to come here, the stretch of the thousand li, might I presume which we have been [here] to yield counsels to distinction my kingdom?'
Mencius replied, 'Why contingency your Majesty make use of which word "profit?" What I yield have been counsels to humanity as well as righteousness, as well as these have been my usually [concerns]. 'If your Majesty say, "What is to be finished to distinction my kingdom?" the senior officers will say, "What is to be finished to distinction the families?" as well as the junior officers as well as the common people will say, "What is to be finished to distinction the persons?" Seniors as well as juniors will try to snatch this distinction the the single from the other, as well as the dominion will be endangered. In the dominion of ten thousand chariots, the killer of his emperor shall be the chief of the family of the thousand chariots. In t! he domin ion of the thousand chariots, the killer of his king shall be the chief of the family of the hundred chariots. To have the thousand in ten thousand, as well as the hundred in the thousand, cannot be pronounced not to be the large allotment, though if righteousness be put last, as well as distinction be put first, they will not be satisfied but snatching all. There never has been the good male who not asked his parents. There never has been the moral male who done his emperor an after-consideration. Let your Majesty contend instead, "Benevolence as well as righteousness; as well as let these be your usually themes." Why contingency we make use of which word "profit?".'
