Gov't mulls forming sentencing council


The supervision is deliberation the arrangement of the sentencing legislature to "standardise" the sentences meted out by the courts.

NONEAnswering the subject by PKR-Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar upon orthodox rape in the Dewan Rakyat today, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz (left) said the matter has been agreed upon by the Chief Justice.

"At the rough level, the Chief Justice is of the view which the sentencing legislature as due by Lembah Pantai is possible, if the executive agrees. But the legislature can usually standardise sentencing.

"However, in the case of (the inhabitant bowler convicted of orthodox rape), we cannot revisit the sentence. It cannot be corrected. It is beyond us," he said.

Nazri, who is de facto law minister, added which the legislature additionally cannot review past sentences, as this will supplement an additional tier to the appeal system.

"So the legislature to review justice decisions cannot be formed, but the legislature to standardise (sentences), as referred to by Lembah Pantai, could be implemented."
