Stateless Indians march to NRD office


Officials set up the special opposite to facilitate their duplicate for citizenship papers.
GEORGE TOWN: About 50 stateless people of Indian origin marched for 100 metres as well as demonstrated peacefully prior to submitting their applications for citizenship papers to the National Registration Department (NRD) today.
They included several senior adults as well as young kids as well as they carried banners as well as chanted slogans.
They marched from the KFC outlet in Jalan Larut to the state NRD office, located in the federal building in Jalan Anson.
They demonstrated for about five minutes outside the building, accompanied by PKR vice-president N Surendran, Penang PKR vice-chairman S Raveentharan, PKR Bayan Baru arch Sim Tze Tzin as well as Penang DAP secretary Ng Wei Aik.
"These people have been not here to apply for citizenship, though to get their MyKad as well as birth certificates," Surendran told newsmen.
There was the slight commotion when some policemen tried to stop the organisation from entering the building as well as threatened to detain them.
Surendran cursed the action, calling it an abuse of power.
The policemen gave in after Surendran told them it would be the violation of citizens' rights to forestall them from submitting their applications.
NRD set up the special opposite for the applicants.
Quoting Article fourteen of the Federal Constitution, Surendran pronounced anyone innate in Mala! ysia wou ld be involuntary citizens.
"There have been hundreds of thousands of stateless persons out there with red identity cards as well as no correct support despite being innate here," he added.
He urged the federal supervision to cut bureaucratic red fasten as well as carry out the national project to grant citizenship to such stateless people.
Natural birthright
About half of the demonstrators managed to contention their applications today. The others were told to lapse with papers which would support their applications.
The oldest between the field was K Packiam, who incited 93 last Saturday. She was innate in Kuala Kurau, though her identity label is red.
"I have practical so most times though never was given the blue IC," she said. "I do not know why."
Packiam's identical tiwn daughters, Ramaie as well as Letchumanan, both 57 today, also carry red ICs. However, her other 4 young kids all have blue ICs.
A 10-year-old girl, M Sasikala, wept as she spoke about being incompetent to attend school for miss of the birth certificate.
Her parents have been distant as well as she lives with her grandparents in Nibong Tebal.
"I only want to go to school as well as study," she said.
Raveentharan pronounced it was the serious violation of constitutional rights for the supervision to repudiate Malaysian-born Indians their right to citizenship as well as simple education.
"It's their natural birthright to get their birth certificates, blue ICs as well as facile education," he said. "The supervision should defend these rights for all."
He pronounced PKR would go on with its cross-country ! debate t o get citizenship for stateless people.
