'Progressives must use religion to counter ulama'

Former budding apportion Dr Mahathir Mohamad currently pronounced progressives who have been opposite to regressive values by ulamas (religious scholars) contingency opposite them with eremite arguments as well as not with western arguments.

The problem, he said, is which in Malaysia is the non-conservatives who have been educated in alternative fields tend to argue with regressive Muslim scholars in conditions of their areas of learning, rather than formed upon religion.

"But it is critical for those Muslims not specialised in sacrament to know their sacrament so which they can opposite conservatives formed upon religion, as well as not the little alternative worth system," he pronounced in his opening debate at the 'High Level Expert Consultation upon Islam as well as Women's Health' conference in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

This, he said, was necessary to convince the ubiquitous public, especially Muslims in the villages who would not accept arguments formed upon Western values.

"For example, in our country, you have the Muslim celebration (PAS) who says if you vote for them, you go to heaven.

"You laugh, though it is pronounced by in the name of Islam from an Islamic celebration - to the reduction educated Muslims in the village, they have been the ones with the turbans, not me.

"So they can't accept somebody's (argument) who is not wearing the turban. But when you point out to them what the Quran says, you will be accepted," he said.

Without eremite learning, he said, non-conservatives or professionals would not have the credentials to opposite the ulama.

"It is critical for all of us to know our sacrament if you wish to handle people bringing regressive ideas in to the society (to the point) which it cannot progress, (such people being) the so called ulamas," he said.

'Focus reduction upon punishments'

Mahathir additionally warned opposite subscribing an impassioned understand of Islam as well as being obsessed with punishment.

He pronounced over-emphasis by the little Muslims upon the sunnah as well as hadith - which he pronounced was "optional" - over the Quran has caused the Muslim village to tumble behind.

"For example, in Malaysia currently there is the debate upon hudud law. There is the bent to concentration upon the most serious low mark probable to appear more Islamic. That is because you see currently things happening which have been not concordant with the Quran," he said.

Instead, Mahathir said, you should ratify the beliefs of probity as upheld in the Quran rather than be obsessed with punishments.

"For example, how can there be probity if the Muslim steals as well as has to have his palm chopped off, though the non-Muslims steals he only gets dual months prison?" he pronounced in reference to opposition celebration PAS' plan to implement hudud law, which relates to Muslims only! .
