A symptom of a deeper divide

Malaysia mostly makes title headlines in the universe for the wrong reason.

Well, if we cannot be famous, we can be infamous!

Malaysias 8TV pulls extremist Ramadan adverts

An racial Chinese family prays in front of the giant paper-made statue of Chinese deity in Malaysia's Bukit Mertajam upon August 25, 2010 About the quarter of Malaysias race have been racial Chinese

A Malaysian TV channel has withdrawn the series of public-service messages about the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, after viewers complained they were racist.

One of the adverts showed an racial Chinese girl acting in the bold manner towards Muslims, followed by the summary saying: Do not be shrill or obnoxious.

In another of the adverts the girl is wearing the vest-top as well as is told: Do not wear tight as well as divulgence clothes.

The station, 8TV, apologised for any inconvenience or uneasiness caused.

It is with most regret that there were misinterpretations in the PSA [public service announcement] that were meant to offer only as the summary of respect for the Ramadan month, the channel pronounced in the summary upon the Facebook page.

The summary was not meant to offend anyone, race or creed in any way. This is an honest mistake involving the very tiny volume of humour that was misinterpreted that led to concerns.

The station, that aims mostly at Malaysias sizeable Chinese minority, pulled the messages from the schedules as well as also changed quickly to undo them from video-sharing websites.

Its Facebook page was inundated with vicious messages.

One web user, Jules Yap, pronounced the channel had shown disgusting, conceited behavio! ur.

< p>Cant believe how conceited the higher-ups in 8TV are, coming out ! with the d efensive, feigned reparation that at the same time blames the viewers for misinterpreting the offensive PSA ads, when the ads have been clearly in poor taste, he said.

Boon Hun said: Gosh, we keep using the word misinterpretations, similar to the the fault!

Ethnic Chinese make up about one quarter of Malaysias population.

They mostly complain of being discriminated against by the countrys laws, that give racial Malays favoured treatment.

I suppose when we need to uncover people how higher we are, we do not unequivocally need to make other people look inferior. In every group, there will be good as well as bad! There must not be any stereo-typing.

How far the nation has been drawn apart by the divisive policies can be seen from this clearly goodwill commercial. This is only the sign of the deeper divide confronting us.

Sigh!
