KUALA LUMPUR: Vietnamese authorities have arrested eleven suspected pirates aboard the chemical tanker after the first such hijacking in the waters around Malaysia in years, the International Maritime Bureau pronounced yesterday.
The Malaysian-owned vessel mislaid communication yesterday while upon the approach from Johor to Sarawak, pronounced Noel Choong, conduct of the bureau's Kuala Lumpur-based piracy stating centre.
After the centre sent out an alert, Vietnamese sea authorities managed to prevent the tanker upon Thursday, arresting eleven suspects. The pirates had changed the ship's name as well as were drifting the Honduran flag.
The tanker's nine organisation members had been expelled during sea upon Wednesday by the pirates, pronounced Choong, adding which the organisation were all safe after being rescued by local fishermen.
Choong pronounced it was the first such box of the tanker with cargo being hijacked upon the approach to Sarawak in several years.
The maritime business praised the Vietnamese as well as Malaysian authorities for their efforts.
"IMB hopes which the authorities will take action as well as examine the incident to contain as well as stop this sort of menace," Choong said.
