Its peoples right to disagree

By P Ramakrishnan, Past President of Aliran

The Minister in a Prime Minister's department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, doesn't seem to understand simple things connected with democracy. His idea of democracy is woefully gloomy as well as disappointing. His stupidity upon issues of democracy is alarming!

While castigating a current Bar Council president, Lim Chee Wee, as well as a former Bar Council president, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, for org! anising a Walk for Freedom peaceful demonstration, he referred to which a Bar Council be registered as a domestic celebration as well as which they should mount for elections.

His mount seems to indicate which usually domestic parties as well as politicians have a right to remonstrate as well as verbalise up as well as if you have been not in either of these categories, you don't have a right to criticize or disagree.

This is utter nonsense. This right to remonstrate or criticize is not a monopoly of a domestic celebration or politician. This God-given right is a birth-right! of ever y individual, as well as it is enshrined in a Constitution.

The right to leisure of assembly, a right to speech of countenance as well as a right to leisure of organisation have been a inalienable rights of each citizen. There have been no caveats placed upon these rights. Nazri, therefore, has no right to insist which a single contingency belong to a domestic celebration to remonstrate with a Barisan Nasional's policies.

The Constitution has no such provisions barring adults from vocalization up or championing a cause.

In a democracy, adults have a purpose to fool around as well as experience in each aspect of governance but belonging to a domestic celebration as well as but being a politi! cian.

Nazri contingency be reminded that, according to A.d. Benoist, "The top magnitude of democracy is conjunction a 'extent of freedom' nor a 'extent of equality', but rather a top magnitude of participation."
